A Surprising Health Benefit of Drinking Tea

A recent study published in ACS Food Science & Technology reveals that brewing tea can significantly reduce toxic heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic from drinking water. Tea leaves naturally adsorb these contaminants during the brewing process, effectively filtering them out before consumption. The study found that longer steeping times enhance this effect, with a five-minute brew reducing lead concentrations by approximately 15%. Ground tea leaves and cellulose tea bags were particularly effective due to increased surface area and material properties. This discovery highlights tea’s potential role in mitigating heavy metal exposure through a simple daily habit.
